Foreign students studying in Canada with a student visa can receive a work permit, with the aim of gaining practical work experience in Canada and subsequently even receive an extended employment permit. Following this, they can also immigrate to Canada and remain in the country as full citizens. To obtain a post-graduation work permit, you must apply under a program specifically designed for this purpose – the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. The work permit in Canada is granted according to the duration of your studies, with the permit being issued for a maximum of 3 years, but not to students whose study period does not exceed 8 months.

Study and Work in Canada

If you are a foreign student in Canada, the government views you as potential skilled workers and even offers you the possibility of immigrating to Canada in the future. Whether you are interested in immigrating to Canada or not, the opportunity to find work, both to support yourself and to gain work experience, is usually an offer hard to refuse. Therefore, you should apply for a work permit in Canada.

Who is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit in Canada?

  • Graduates who have studied continuously in Canada in study programs of at least 8 months.
  • Graduates of a public educational institution such as a college or university.
  • Graduates of private educational institutions in Canada, in a program that upon completion grants a degree recognized by the state.
  • Graduates of a vocational institution in Quebec that offers study programs including 900 study hours or more, after which they receive a vocational diploma.

In addition, you must submit the application no later than 90 days from the moment the educational institution informs you that you have met all the criteria for receiving a certificate, have completed the study content, and are entitled to receive the degree or vocational diploma, and you have confirmation of this at the time of submitting the work permit application.
