RCIP and REDI pilot routes

Have you already heard about the Permanent Residence opportunities through the RCIP and REDI pilot programs?

If you’re already in Canada, the clock is ticking — and you may find yourself wondering how on earth you can still achieve Permanent Residence in today’s complex and challenging situation.

Here are two more options you should definitely take into account.

Perhaps, after all, you won’t need to move to another province — but you may need to go a bit further away from the city and settle in more distant suburbs.

Introducing:

RCIP (Rural Community Immigration Pilot)
REDI (Regional Economic Development through Immigration)

Both of these programs offer a pathway to Permanent Residence for those willing to work and settle in rural communities or less populated regions in several provinces.

👩‍💼 What is RCIP?

The RCIP is a pilot project designed to bring skilled workers to rural communities across Canada to address labor shortages. The program is open to 14 selected communities, including Thunder Bay, Timmins, and North Bay.

Immigration is carried out through an employer-driven process. This means the applicant does not apply directly to the immigration authorities, but through a local employer authorized by the community.

Key requirements:

  • A permanent, full-time job offer from an approved employer in a participating community.

  • At least one year of relevant work experience (1,560 hours) within the past three years.

  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

  • Proof of language ability in English or French. Minimum CLB 4. The language requirement depends on the occupation but is generally not very high, making this pathway accessible even for those whose English is not native-level.

  • Proof of sufficient settlement funds to support yourself and your family.

After receiving a recommendation from the community, you can submit your Permanent Residence application through the Canadian immigration portal.

👩‍🏭 What is REDI?

The REDI is a pilot project by the Government of Ontario, aimed at rural areas in the north and west of the province, such as Leeds and Grenville, Lanark, Sarnia-Lambton, and Thunder Bay.

The program operates under the OINP (Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program) and offers an annual quota of up to 200 candidates per region. Its goal is to attract skilled workers to in-demand fields such as healthcare, technology, and trades.

Key requirements:

  • A permanent, full-time job offer from a local employer.

  • Minimum eligibility according to the NOC category (0, 1, 2, 3 – skilled occupations; 4, 5 – in-demand occupations).

  • Full-time job offer (at least 30 hours per week).

  • Additional requirements may apply depending on the NOC category.

How to get started?

  1. Eligibility check: Make sure you meet the basic requirements for each pilot.

  2. Job search: Look for opportunities on sites like Job Bank, Indeed, and LinkedIn.

  3. Approach employers: Send resumes and cover letters to approved employers.

  4. Receive a job offer: If the employer is interested, they will apply for a community recommendation.

  5. Apply for PR: Once you have the recommendation, you can submit your Permanent Residence application through the immigration portal.

💡 Important tips

  • Carefully meet all requirements set by the employer and community.

  • Be ready to present documents such as educational diplomas, language test results, and employer references.

  • Remember: the employer is the leading factor in the process — they submit the application on your behalf.
