The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a test designed to assess English language skills and includes several sections.
There are two main types of the IELTS test:
IELTS Academic: Intended for those who want to study at higher education institutions or register with professional bodies and undergo professional training in an English-speaking country.
IELTS General Training: Intended for those who want to immigrate to an English-speaking country or for training or studies at a non-academic level, and for individuals who need basic English language skills as proof of their ability to adapt to a workplace or other environment where they will be required to communicate at the most basic level.
In addition, any person who wishes to formally immigrate to English-speaking countries, including Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Australia, must take the test, although there are exceptional cases, and each country has different requirements regarding the test.
The test is divided into four parts:
- Reading: Includes various texts to which questions must be answered.
- Writing: Includes two tasks: the first is a description of a graph or information, and the second is writing an essay on a specific topic.
- Listening: Includes recordings of different speakers, and questions must be answered accordingly.
- Speaking: An interview with an examiner, in which various topics are discussed.
In the case of immigration to Canada – is the test required?
