ETA – Electronic Travel Authorization for Entry to Canada

ETA, or Electronic Travel Authorization, is a document that authorizes a person seeking to enter Canada or transit through it on the way to another destination – to do so legally and officially, issued by the Immigration Department of the Government of Canada.

Who is the ETA for?

The ETA approval for Canada is intended for people of non-Canadian citizenship, who are exempt from the requirement to issue a visa to Canada. Foreign nationals who are not required to issue an ETA approval for Canada are citizens of the United States and foreign nationals who already have an approved visa for immigration or work in Canada. The purpose of issuing the ETA approval is to allow the Government of Canada to screen those seeking to enter or transit through it, before their arrival in the country, and in fact, to alleviate the burden of applications and streamline the process of approving those entering Canada.

Important details about the ETA:

  • How to issue an eTA?

The issuance process is done online on the Government of Canada website. You must fill out a form with personal information and provide credit card details for payment.

  • How long is it valid?

The eTA is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

  • Is it mandatory?

Yes, every visitor who does not require a visa must issue an eTA before flying to Canada.

How does it affect entry to Canada?

The eTA does not guarantee automatic entry to Canada, but it is necessary to board a flight to Canada.

Updated regulation for ETA approvals

The Immigration Department of the Government of Canada recently updated that until September 2016, those who are about to enter Canada and do not yet have an ETA approval can continue with the flight plan as usual, as long as they have relevant approvals such as a valid passport. Of course, if you have already booked a flight ticket, you must check the additional requirements for approval of your entry into Canada, in order to meet all the formal conditions that exist until the implementation of the ETA approvals from next September. It is very important to take into account that even if you have a valid passport or only some of the documents required for approved entry to Canada, you will not be able to do so without collecting and updating all the documents in their entirety, exactly according to the requirements of the Immigration Department of the Government of Canada.
